As a well-rounded guitarist and vocalist, Derek has become an educator through years of professional and applied music experience. He started learning guitar at the age of 10, performed in school choirs and musicals, and was accepted to Ball State University's Music School with a focus in classical guitar. While earning his degree and studying guitar with Paul Riley, he instructed guitar at a local music store, and helped form an a Capella singing community at Ball State. Being an avid music director in his own all-male group, he developed his own vocal, piano, and unique "beat-boxing" ability, and they've participated in International competitions for consecutive years. He graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Media Production, and now resides in McCordsville, IN.
Derek performs with multiple groups in Indianapolis today, but most notably as the lead guitarist and primary vocalist for The Indigos. Together, The Indigos have released an EP and full-length album called "Indigo Army," toured from LA to New Jersey, and played dozens of festivals around the U.S. He continues to compete with a local a Capella singing group, and is self-employed as a freelance performer and producer. He is very passionate about all elements of music and loves to share his experiences through education.
